LAS VEGAS —A 24 year old brunette was finally proclaimed and hailed as the new Miss USA 2010 during the coronation night of the prestigious pageant.
Rima Fakih of Dearborn, Mich., won the title at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip after swimsuit, evening- gown and interview competitions.
Born in New York, Fakih, 24, was raised in Dearborn with her parents and her younger brother, Rami. She plans to start law school after her stint as 2010 Miss USA.
Fakih said she hopes that her position will help break some of the negative stereotypes about Arab-Americans. She wants to “show the world that there are Arabs who are beautiful, not only in looks but also on the inside. There are Arabs that are caring, that are good people, and who love the country they live in.”
When asked how she felt about winning the crown, she said, “Ask me after I’ve had a pizza.”
Fakih won a spot representing the United States in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant, a one-year lease on a New York apartment with living expenses and an undisclosed salary.
