Mark your calendars and save the date April 29, 2011 as Britain will celebrate a very special day. The royal family has announced Tuesday that the Royal wedding of His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales to lady Catherine Elizabeth “kate” Middleton will happen on a Friday next year at Westminster Abbey in London.

After 8 long years of courtship, Britain’s Prince William has finally ask the hand of his lady Kate last week in Kenya. News of the royal engagement spread like wild fire. Soon people were eager to find out details about the wedding. Tuesdays announcement ends a week of speculation about the date and venue.

A spokeswoman for Prince Charles issued an official statement “The royal family will pay for the wedding, following the precedence set by the marriages of the prince and princess of Wales in 1981 and Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip in 1947”.

Prime Minister David Cameron was delighted to know and said the government will shoulder any wider transportation or security-related costs.

The thousand-year-old Westminster Abbey saw a sudden spike of visitors with royal fans, the media, and bookies swarming the place after the couple announced their engagement a week ago.

Westminster Abbey, formally know as Collegiate Church of St. Peter at Westminster, is founded in 960, with the present Gothic church dating to 1245. Located just west of the Palace of Westminster, the place has been a “coronation church” since 1066— the place where kings and queens are crowned when they ascend to the throne– and burial site for English and British monarchs of the Commonwealth Realms.

Westminster Abbey staged several important events in Prince Williams life. The funeral service for his dear mother Princess Diana of was held there in 1997. His grandmother Queen Elizabeth II married Prince Philip there in 1947, when she was still a princess; her father, King George VI, got married there in 1923.

Days after the announcement, Middleton was seen leaving the Abbey with her parents. According to British newspapers, Middleton and her parents had a private after-hours tour.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Cameron welcomed the announcement and has made the wedding day a national holiday. “The wedding of Kate and William will be a happy and momentous occasion. We want to mark the day as one of national celebration. A public holiday will ensure the most people possible will have a chance to celebrate on the day.” Cameron said in a statement.

Prince William Arthur Philip Louis of Wales, second in the line of succession to the thrones of 16 independent states, met Catherine Elizabeth Middleton at St. Andrews University. The two grew closer when they became flatmates. The young lovebirds began dating officially in 2003. After four years of being each other’s sweetheart, news broke out the the couple has called it quits on2007 but after a few months the couple was seen together again. On 16 November 2010, Clarence House announced that Prince William and Catherine Middleton are to marry on 29 April 2011 in Westminster Abbey, London.
