Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration – Last September 15, 2010 was the start of the 30-day period of the Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States. The celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week which was approved by President Lyndon Johnson. It was then expanded in 1988 to become a month’s celebration from September 15 to October 15. On August 17, 1988, Hispanic Heritage Month was then enacted into law upon the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The law states that September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration because it is the anniversary of independence day of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. They all declared independence in 1821.

During the 30-day Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, several activities will be held to help spread the word about Hispanic culture and individual and community achievements. It also provides an opportunity to focus national attention upon the contributions of the Hispanic community to American society. Happy Heritage Month Celebration!
