Ganesh Chaturthi Pooja 2010 Festival: Happy Ganesh Charturthi to all Hindus – September 11, 2010 marks the celebration of the Ganesh Chaturthi Festival by all Hindus. Also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, Ganesh Chaturthi is the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati, both Hindu Deities, who is believed to bestow his presence on earth for all his devotees in the duration of this festival.
Ganesh Chaturthi festival is a 10-day celebration and is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi, the fourth day of the waxing moon period. While celebrated all over India, Ganesh Chaturthi festival is most elaborate in Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Orissa , Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Outside of India, it is celebrated widely in Nepal and by Hindus in U.S.and Fiji.
In India, two to three months before the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, artistic clay models of Lord Ganesha are made for sale by specially skilled artisans. Ganesh Chaturthi starts with the installation of these Ganesh statues in colorfully decorated homes and specially erected temporary structures called mandapas in every locality. These mandapas are erected by the people or a specific society or locality by collecting monetary contributions.
After the erection of Ganesh statues, the priest usually wearing clad in red silk dhoti and shawl invokes life into the statue by chanting mantras. This Hindu ritual is called Pranapratishhtha. After this, the ritual called Shhodashopachara follows where coconut, jaggery, 21 modakas, 21 durva (trefoil) blades of grass and red flowers are offered. Ganesh statue is then anointed with red unguent, typically made of Kumkum & Sandalwood paste. Throughout the ceremony, Vedic hymns from the Rig Veda, the Ganapati Atharva Shirsha Upanishad, and the Ganesha stotra from the Narada Purana are chanted.
For those at home, Ganesha Chaturthi poojas can also be observed at the comfort of your own homes. A procedure from Hindu Blog on how to perform Ganesh Charturthi poojas at home can be found here.
