The first ever feature musical for DreamWorks entitled “Monkeys of Bollywood” has caught the attention of the president of Universal Society of Hinduism, Rajan Zed. He released a statement in Nevada (USA) that he concerned of how the film would turn out as it was first reported to be “inspired” by Hindus’ timeless epic Ramayan. it a highly revered scripture of Hinduism and the film should coincide with what is really written in the scripture. Ramayan is a an ancient Sanskrit scripture that consists of 24,000 stanzas, explores various themes, including human existence, concept of dharma, etc.
The film was directed by Paul Mayeda Berges (What’s Cooking) and Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham). It is lyricist Stephen Schwartz and Oscar winner composer A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire) have reportedly teamed on Bollywood-style “Monkeys of Bollywood”, wherein the story revolves around two monkeys.
Zed made mention that if the film aims to truly get inspiration from the scripture, he or other Hindu scholars would gladly provide the resources or the film makers should involve a real expert of Hinduism. He is just concerned of the fact that i might mishandle facts and would pillage serious spiritual doctrines and revered symbols as well as hurt the devotees.
“Hollywood/Bollywood were welcome to make movies about Ramayan but the final product should be the true depiction of it and not a fantasized or a re-imagined version,” Rajan Zed pointed out. Their religion is the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion adherents and a rich philosophical thought and it should not be taken lightly. No faith, larger or smaller, should be plundered, he added.
