Aussie Samuels Pulls Out of Delhi Games – The world champion discus thrower Dani Samuels has withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games because of worries over her health and safety in Delhi. She is the first Australian to pull out of the Games because of her concerns.

Her decision was based after Sunday’s gun attack on a tourist bus in Delhi and an outbreak of dengue fever in the city. Two Taiwanese men were wounded when attackers on a motorbike opened fire on a tourist bus outside the Jama Masjid mosque. There has been an outbreak of dengue fever in July which had affected more than 1,500 people in Delhi.

Samuels’ manager Hayden Knowles said, the situation has been bothering her for some time and the vents of the weekend made it real. He hoped the decision made by Samuels would not affect the other Australian athletes who are preparing to complete in the Indian capital. He also added that Samuels found it hard to announce her decision because she’s concerned of how it might affect other players in the team.

Samuels won the world discus title in Berlin in 2009. She had been tipped to add the Commonwealth title to her collection after winning a three-woman event that featured America’s Olympic champion Stephanie Brown-Trafton in Sydney the previous week.
