UFC 117 is over and we have seen a mix of expected and stunning results as well.
UFC Middleweight Anderson Silva successfully defended his title against trash talking Chael Sonnen. What many did not expect was how Silva actually stole the fight away from Sonnen. The trash talking Sonnen lived up to his word of taking the fight to Silva, at least for the first four and a half rounds. Sonnen dominated the fight until Silva caught him halfway through the fifth round with a triangle choke. Sonnen was leading on all scorecards but lost via submission.
Junior Dos Santos was favored to defeat TUF winner Roy “Big Country” Nelson. What we did not expect was how tough Nelson was at taking all the punishment from Dos Santos. Most of Cigano’s fights end within the first round but this last one went the distance. Eventually, Dos Santos got all the judges’ nod as he took Nelson to an uppercut clinic.
In the welterweight bout that features Hall of Fame fighter Matt Hughes against Gracie student Ricardo Almeida, the younger Almeida was favored to win. Hughes came up with a stunning left to the face of Almeida to set him up for a triangle choke. Almeida passed out as the referee call the stoppage.
I picked Clay Guida to win in his matchup with Rafael Dos Anjos. Dos Anjos had other plans as he took the first two rounds from Guida. Guida was possibly trailing 20-18 going to the last round when Dos Anjos tapped out due to a broken jaw he sustained since round one.
In a catchweight bout, Thiago Alves and Jon Fitch met again for top welterweight contender spot. Alves came in over the weight limit and appeared sluggish against Fitch. It was not a fan-friendly fight but Fitch did what was needed to grind out a decision win.
